Why X Money Caught My Attention
I am always trying to find ways I can make more money on our cash, but due to the constant change of rates, and some of the direct deposit requirements and the general pain it is to switch, I have to be pretty enticed by the rates and features.
After a short hiatus, rates are on the rise once again and the difference between leaving your money in “traditional” checking or savings versus higher-yielding accounts can add up to a sizable difference over time. Our job for our clients is to maximize your cash and keep pace with inflation after taxes as best as we can.
Right now, the most compelling option out there is one you may not have considered: X Money.
X Money blends a checking and savings account inside the X app, with a metal Visa debit card.
AT A GLANCE — X MONEY, SEPTEMBER 2026
- 6.00% APY — standard rate on X Premium+
- 3% Cash back on eligible card purchases
- $10M Aggregate FDIC pass-through via sweep
- $395/yr Premium+ web subscription
Rates are variable and can change at any time.
Important Caveats: Politics, Platform Access and Eligibility
I’ll start with the caveat that any of Elon Musk’s companies are very polarizing. For some, Elon Musk is unpalatable; for others, he’s a genius. We will not spend any time attending to that, my goal for clients is to maximize their after-tax rate of return while taking the least amount of risk required to do so.
The caveat here is that you have to be signed up for X, which for some people may or may not be possible due to their personal beliefs or unwillingness to be part of social media. An X subscription is no longer required to use X Money. For those that are willing to have an X account, there can be some definite benefits to considering opening an account at X Money.
What Is X Money? Features, Structure, and FDIC Coverage
X Money is an interesting concept because it basically blends a checking and savings account all into one. It lives inside the X app. You get a stored-value cash account, instant peer-to-peer payments to any @handle (with no fees or limits), bill pay, free wires, mailed checks, early direct deposit (up to 2 days early), a virtual card, and a physical metal Visa debit card they send you in the mail.
X Payments LLC is not a bank. Deposit accounts are held at Cross River Bank, an FDIC insured bank, with the added benefit of being automatically enrolled in a cash sweep program that can provide up to $10 million in aggregate FDIC pass-through coverage across participating network banks. Standard coverage at a single bank remains $250,000 per depositor, per ownership category. Check their website for official terms.
X Money Interest Rates & Tier Breakdown (as of late September 2026)
X Money has officially launched for all eligible X users in the US. An X subscription is no longer required to use X Money.
Right now, if you sign up for their Premium+ plan, you are receiving a rate of 6% APY. This 6% rate is unparalleled out there, and I have not found anything that is FDIC-insured and pays a higher rate. This offering is very new and I have no designs that this rate will remain permanent forever, as many online banks in the past have offered higher “teaser” rates to attract deposits. That being said, while the rate remains elevated and well above market, the product is worth the math.
X users with no subscription and Basic subscribers get 4% APY as standard. Those users get 6% APY if you receive at least $1,000 in eligible direct deposits or X Creator payouts within a trailing 34-day period.
Premium subscribers earn 4.00% APY as the standard rate and can be boosted to 6.00% APY after receiving at least $1,000 in qualifying deposits. Premium+ earns 6.00% APY as the standard rate. Rates are variable and can change at any time. Note: New York residents currently do not receive APY or interest boosts on these stored-value accounts.
| Feature | Free / Basic User | X Premium | X Premium+ |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard APY | 4.00% | 4.00% | 6.00% |
| Boosted APY | 6.00% with at least $1,000 in qualifying deposits or X Creator payouts in a trailing 34 days | 6.00% with at least $1,000 in qualifying deposits within a trailing 34-day window | Already 6.00% |
| Web subscription (US) | $0 | $8/month or $84/year | $40/month or $395/year |
| Card cash back | 1%, or 3% with qualifying direct deposit | 3% on eligible purchases | 3% on eligible purchases |
| FDIC structure | Cross River + sweep (up to $10M aggregate, subject to terms) | Cross River + sweep (up to $10M aggregate, subject to terms) | Same |
Source: X Money Interest FAQ (rates effective as of 7/27/2026; still observed at these levels in September 2026). App-store subscription prices are higher than web prices. X Premium+ versus X Premium, standard rates as of September 2026. Rates are variable.
Calculating Premium+ vs. Direct Deposit Boosts
Because an X subscription is no longer required to use X Money, the math has completely shifted in favor of the consumer. Non-paying users and Basic subscribers earn 4% APY as standard, and can bump that to 6% APY for free simply by receiving at least $1,000 in eligible direct deposits or X Creator payouts within a trailing 34-day period.
The Break-Even
If you choose to subscribe to Premium+ to skip the direct deposit requirement, the incremental cost of Premium+ versus Premium on the web is about $311 a year ($395 vs. $84). At a 2-percentage-point rate gap (6% vs. 4%), you need roughly $15,550 sitting in the account for a full year just to cover that extra subscription cost before taxes. However, if you are a Free, Basic, or Premium user, getting the 6% APY boost and unlocking the full 3% cash back by routing $1,000 of qualifying direct deposit or creator payouts into the account every 34 days is now the cheapest path to the headline rate.
Then layer on the 1%-3% cash back. That added benefit, along with the 6% APY, means it is unmatched in my view for what a bank-like product can offer at this time, provided you actually use the card on eligible spend and you are comfortable holding cash inside X.
Onboarding & Account Setup: Real-World Experience
It did take a couple of weeks to become eligible. Despite the fact that I signed up for Premium+, I did not receive access to X Money immediately. That was one piece that I really didn’t care for, but apparently I had to go through some sort of vetting process before I got an invitation.
When I opened the account, it took literally less than five minutes. The account opening process was probably the easiest account opening process I’ve ever been through. The frictionless way that I signed up for the account once I became eligible was quite a great experience from a UI perspective.
You can name beneficiaries on your account, which you do have to do afterwards on the web, which is a minor inconvenience, but something that everybody should do.
The Joint Account Catch: How Multi-User Yields Work
The Catch: A joint account pays at the tier of the lower-subscribed owner. Both owners need Premium+ to earn 6% on joint money (or qualify via direct deposit).
You must have an individual account before opening a joint account. Additionally, your joint account holder must have an X account at the subscription tier required for your target APY. For example, I signed my wife up for Premium to save on subscription costs, but her individual Premium account only yielded 4%. As a result, our joint account also carried a 4% rate instead of my Premium+ rate of 6%.
Fortunately, there is a simple workaround: setting up a $1,000 qualifying direct deposit on her account (or directly into the joint account) triggers the 6% boosted APY without requiring a second $395/year Premium+ subscription.
Ultimately, account holders are faced with three options: pay for a second Premium+ subscription, keep the bulk of the cash in the primary Premium+ owner’s individual account, or route $1,000 in qualifying direct deposits to unlock the 6% boost for free. As shown in the break-even math above, running the numbers first ensures you choose the most cost-effective path.
Visa Card Perks: 3% Cash Back and Everyday Banking Features
Not only do you have a debit card where you can get cash, but you also have something that can act like a spend card as well. Currently, non-subscribed users earn 1% cash back (boosted to 3% with $1,000 in qualifying direct deposits), while Premium and Premium+ subscribers earn a flat 3% cash back on eligible purchases. This is among the best cash back that I’ve seen on a debit product.
There is a virtual card immediately, as well as a physical metal card (free for Premium and Premium+ subscribers; $25 for non-subscribers). The card works as a Visa is accepted and was easily added to Apple Pay. It also reimburses out-of-network ATM fees (up to two $4 reimbursements per month on Basic; unlimited for Premium/Premium+). Other key perks include Visa’s Zero Liability Policy, free wires (up to 2 free per year on Premium; unlimited on Premium+), and instant peer-to-peer payments on X with no fees or limits. Note that cash back is not paid on every category; exclusions apply to transactions like gambling, cash equivalents, and financial transfers.
Other useful features:
- Early Direct Deposit: Receive eligible paychecks up to two days early.
- Instant P2P Payments: Send, receive, or request money instantly on X with no fees or limits.
- Outbound Domestic Wires: Transfer funds via wire directly within the app.
- Mailed Checks & Bill Pay: Pay bills or have physical checks issued and mailed on your behalf.
- Beneficiaries: Easily assign account beneficiaries (accessible on the web).
- Enhanced Security: Protect your account with passkey integration.
- Custom Transaction Limits: Adjust spend and withdrawal limits to fit your daily needs.
Risks, Limitations, and State Exclusions to Consider
The APY is variable. Do not build a 10-year plan around 6%.
Access is tied to an X account. Account status on X can affect access to the money product.
Availability is U.S.-centric and not complete. Money-transmitter coverage has been described as 41 states plus D.C.; New York residents currently earn no APY. Confirm your state before moving cash.
X is not the bank. Cross River Bank and sweep partners hold the deposits. Read the sweep terms if you will hold well above $250,000.
This is a debit product, not a credit card. Chargebacks and purchase protection follow Visa debit rules, not typical credit-card rules.
Interest is taxable. After-tax yield is what actually keeps pace with inflation.
The Verdict: Who Should (and Shouldn’t) Open an X Money Account?
This is for people who already use X or are willing to, who can park a meaningful cash balance, and who want a checking-plus-savings hybrid with a high current yield and a strong debit cash-back rate. It is not for anyone who refuses to hold an X account, anyone in a state without full product access or without interest, or anyone who needs a traditional branch bank.
If the rate does stay at 6% for an extended period of time, this provides bond-like returns without duration or credit risk. For a risk averse investor or someone that is parking a large amount of cash for a future purchase at a shorter timeframe, this may be hard to beat.
Conclusion
In conclusion, X Money is an extremely competitive high rate of return and high cash-back account. So it’s something to look into to maximize your cash right now in a time when we may see increasing market volatility and elevated interest-rate uncertainty, as well as an inflationary environment that may not go as well in our favor.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) about X Money
Does X Money really pay 6% APY?
𝕏 users with no subscription, Basic, and Premium subscribers earn 4% APY as standard, boosted to 6.00% APY with $1,000 or more in eligible direct deposits or X Creator payouts in a trailing 34-day period. Premium+ currently lists 6.00% APY as the standard rate. Rates are variable. New York residents currently earn no interest.
Is X Money FDIC insured?
Funds are held at Cross River Bank, Member FDIC, up to $250,000 per depositor, per bank, per ownership category. Eligible balances can be swept across a network of FDIC-insured banks for up to $10 million in aggregate pass-through coverage, subject to program conditions. X Payments LLC is not an FDIC-insured bank.
Do I need X Premium to open X Money?
No. An X subscription is no longer required to use X Money. It has officially launched for all eligible X users in the US. You also need to pass X’s eligibility and vetting process, which can take time even after you subscribe.
Is the 3% cash back unlimited?
X markets 3% unlimited cash back on eligible card purchases as long as you are on the higher interest rate tier (Premium or qualifying deposits). Certain categories are excluded, and terms allow X to cap or change the rate. Claim or auto-redeem rewards in the app.
Can my spouse and I share the 6% rate on a joint account?
In my experience, the joint account paid the lower Premium rate when only one spouse was on Premium+. To keep 6% on joint money, both owners needed the Premium+ tier — or keep most of the cash in the individual Premium+ account (or qualify via $1,000 in qualifying direct deposits).
Will the 6% rate last?
I have no designs that this rate will remain permanent forever. Use it while it is above market, and be ready to move cash if the APY compresses or if the subscription math stops working.
